Stop Guessing and Start Understanding Your Natural Hair with This 5-Step System

Many women with curly natural hair face a common challenge: they rely on social media advice instead of professional guidance. This often leads to confusion rather than clear results. You might find yourself following routines from non-professionals, buying multiple products without knowing their purpose, choosing brands over product function, or wanting high-maintenance styles without maintaining hair health.

The root problem is a lack of understanding about your hair’s behavior and why you use certain products.

So instead of improving their hair, they’re:

  •   Making dryness worse

  •   Increasing tangling

  •   Confusing breakage with shedding

  •   Creating inconsistent results

This blog post will guide you through a clear 5-step system to stop guessing and start understanding your natural hair. By following these steps, you will build a routine that supports your hair’s health and beauty.

At the end of this blog, there is a resource for you that you can take and save to your phone. This free guide outlines the 5-step system to help you on your journey to healthier hair.

Step 1: Identify What Your Hair Is Actually Doing

Before you buy another product or try another routine, you need to understand your hair’s behavior.

Ask yourself:

  •   Does my hair feel dry or dehydrated?

  •   Is my hair breaking or shedding?

  •   Does my hair tangle excessively?

  •   Is my hair not holding a style?

  •   Am I struggling with length retention?

Most women don’t fully understand how to identify these differences—and that’s exactly why they stay stuck.

You cannot fix what you don’t understand.

Step 2: Start With the Right Shampoo, Not the Right Brand

Once you identify what your hair is doing, the next step is choosing the correct type of shampoo.

This is where many women get it wrong.

A brand is not the same as a product function.

For most women with curly hair, this means starting with a hydrating shampoo.

Here’s what to do:

  •   Shampoo your hair weekly

  •   Use warm water to fully saturate your hair

  •   Work in sections

  •   Shampoo twice

If your hair does not lather on the first shampoo, that’s a sign that something is sitting on the hair (product, oils, or buildup).

At that point, your hair may need a different type of cleanser—but not always a harsh clarifying shampoo.

Depending on what’s on the hair, you may need:

  •   An all-purpose shampoo

  •   A hard water shampoo

  •   Or a clarifying shampoo

Not all buildup requires the same level of cleansing.

Using a shampoo that is too harsh can dry your hair out, so it’s important to choose based on what your hair actually needs—not just what you’ve seen online.

The goal is to properly cleanse your hair so it can receive moisture.

Step 3: HYDRATE HAIR PROPERLY

After shampooing, your hair must be hydrated correctly.

This is not just putting conditioner on your hair—this is a hydration process.

Here’s what to do:

  •   Apply a hydrating treatment on soaking wet hair

  •   Emulsify the product in your hands before applying (rub it together until smooth and creamy)

  •   Work from ends to roots

  •   Fully saturate every strand

  •   Finger detangle in sections

  •   Add a little warm water to help distribute the product

Your hair should feel soft and you should begin to see your natural curl pattern forming.

Finish with a plastic cap and sit under a dryer according to product directions

Step 4: Apply Your Styling Products Based on Your Style (Wet or Dry — Not Damp)

After rinsing your treatment with cool to lukewarm water, apply your styling products based on your style.

Your hair should be either wet or dry—not damp.

If you are doing a wash-and-go:

  •   Apply products on soaking wet hair

  •   Use leave-in (optional) and gel

  •   Work in sections

  •   Use finger detangling/raking method

  •   Fully coat every strand

Your curls should begin to clump and define.

If you are doing a twist set, rod set, or braid set:

  •   Start on blown-out (dry) hair

  •   Apply mousse or styling product section by section

  •   Do not apply product all over at once

  •   Work piece by piece for consistency

Step 5: Maintain Hair Health With Consistent Care

After applying your styling products, your hair must be dried properly.

Sit under a hooded dryer immediately and allow your hair to dry 100%.

This:

  •   Sets the style

  •   Forms a cast for definition

  •   Prevents excessive shrinkage

  •   Helps your style last longer

Air drying or leaving the hair damp will lead to inconsistent results

Most women aren’t struggling because their hair won’t grow…

They’re struggling because they don’t understand what their hair is doing—and they don’t understand the correct products to fix those behaviors.
